Diwali differs depending on region and tradition. Billions of people worldwide celebrate Diwali. Diwali or Deepavali or Divali; is a festival of lights and one of the major festivals celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and some Buddhists. The festival usually lasts five days and is celebrated during the month of Kartika (between Mid-October and Mid-November). One of the most popular festivals of Hinduism, Diwali symbolizes the spiritual “victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance”. In some regions, Diwali symbolizes Lord Rama returning to his kingdom Ayodhya with his wife Sita and his brother Lakshmana after defeating Ravana in Lanka & serving 14 years of exile.
The first day, known as Dhanteras ( cleaning homes and purchasing small items of gold ). Lakshmi is the focus of worship on that day. On the second day, called Naraka Chaturdashi or Choti Diwali, prayers are also offered for the souls of ancestors ( commemorates Krishna’s destruction of Narakasura ). On the third day, It is the main day of the Diwali festival, Lakshmi Puja to ensure their prosperity; light, Diya, candles, and fireworks; and visit temples.
The fourth day, known as Goverdhan Puja, Balipratipada, or Annakut, commemorates Krishna’s defeat of Indra, the king of the gods. Most of the Merchants perform religious ceremonies & open new books of account. The fifth day, called Bhai Dooj, Bhai Fota, Bhai Tika, or Bhai Bij, celebrates the bond between brothers & sisters. On that day sisters pray for the success, health and well-being of their brothers.
Generally, Diwali celebrates by exchanging gifts, wearing new clothes, feasting, feeding the poor, and setting off fireworks (though such displays have been restricted to limit noise and other environmental pollution). Especially, Gambling in the form of card games is encouraged as a way of ensuring good luck in the coming year.
Diwali is also an important festival in Jainism. The lighting of the lamps celebrates the light of Mahavira’s holy knowledge. Since the 18th century, Diwali has been celebrated in Sikhism as the time of Guru Hargobind’s return to Amritsar from captivity in Gwalior. Residents of Amritsar lit lamps throughout the city to celebrate the occasion. Although not a primary festival of Buddhism. They celebrate by lighting lamps, decorating temples and monasteries, and worshipping the Buddha.
